Mutual Receptions

Saturn-Jupiter Ruler-Exaltation
Saturn-Jupiter Ruler-Triplicity
Moon-Saturn Ruler-Face
Jupiter-Venus Ruler-Face
Venus-Saturn Exaltation-Term
Venus-Saturn Triplicity-Term

The most significant is the mutual reception between Saturn and Venus. Venus exalts Saturn, Saturn is in the domicile of Venus. These two planets will strongly assist one another, as will the conditions they represent.

On the Lord of the Geniture

The planet that has the most essential and accidental dignity in the nativity is deemed the Lord of the Geniture, and the native will more or less partake of the nature of the planet in terms of personality. This planet has a strong influence on the native’s nature, her “Conditions, Complexion, Temperament and Manners,” that is, on her personal circumstances, her innate disposition, and her mental and emotional characteristics. In this case, the Lord of the Geniture is Saturn.

Lilly tells us that persons ruled by a highly Saturn are “Grave persons, with a certain austerity, advised, excogitating profound matters, taciturn, solitary, laborous, patient, preservers of riches, sparing and thrifty, studious for their own profit, zealous and mistrustful.”

Persons ruled by this planet tend to be somewhat apart from others, lonesome or lonely by choice, inclined to study rather than to play, determined and persistent, and somewhat melancholy. Saturn highly dignified is associated with the highest and the most profound occupations, with philosophy, with astrology, and profound sciences. Sometimes feared, generally misunderstood, they tend be solitary creatures because, seen from Saturn’s height, every other planet and person appear to be rather trivial and we seem to have little in common with them.

On the Complexion or Temperament of the Native

Complexion or Temperament is a description of the innate disposition of the native in terms of the four humours of medieval philosophy and medical astrology. Each of the four temperaments is also associated with one of the 4 Classical Elements – Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Although one humour will generally dominate and thus give birth to a person’s temperament, the tint of the spectacles through which they see the world, it is possible to have a temperament of a mixed nature. Our temperament, which is our general sense of the world, will colour the experiences we undergo and the meaning we ascribe to them. As an example, a melancholic stood up by a friend might be despondent and reflect on what a miserable person he must be to be rejected so, whereas a choleric might be furious at his friend’s tardiness and lack of respect. The event is the same, the temperaments differ.

As well as being a basic description of our fundamental personality, the calculation of our temperament also gives us an indication of where we are imbalanced. Just as Mars becomes malefic due to its extreme heat, and Saturn because of its extreme coldness, an excess of one of quality – of heat, cold, moisture or dryness – can lead to illness and disease, and it was the view of the medieval astrologers and physicians that an imbalance was injurious to health.

The significators of the complexion are:

1. The sign ascending and the Lord thereof.
2. The planet or planets placed in the ascendant, or the Nodes of the Moon or planets in partile aspecting the ascendant.
3. The Moon and planet or planets beholding her within mediety of their orbs.
4. The quarter of the year or sign the Sun is in.
5. The Lord of the Geniture.

An overabundance of the qualities of Hot and Dry gives a choleric temperament. Lilly describes choleric people as “full of anger, quarrelsome, revengeful, ambitious, importunate, imperious, hardy, rash, involving themselves into unnecessary troubles, seditious, many times ingenious, and easily changing their opinions”.

If the description seems a little unflattering to you, don’t be alarmed, as Lilly’s descriptions of the other four temperaments are not that much better. Often regarded as short tempered, cholerics tend to be driven, detail oriented, assertive and can become impatient and overwhelmed when things are not going according to plan. This same focus and willpower, when brought to bear on important tasks will often lead the choleric person to the success and glory that they so often crave.

Cholerics are prone to fevers, headaches, and burnout from the excess emotional energy they carry and as a result of the workaholic nature of the true choleric. They get on best with sanguine temperaments, cannot abide other cholerics, and usually do not understand the melancholic.

Of the Manners of the Native

We may not doubt, but that the manners and motions of the mind, and the greatest part of our principal human actions and events of life, do accompany, or are concomitant with, and acted according to the quality of the Temperature and inclinations; for the accidents of the Mind are twofold, some rational, others irrational, or more proper to the Sensitive power. William Lilly, Christian Astrology p534

Significators: No planets in ascendant. Moon trine sun, square mercury, venus, jupiter, and saturn. Mercury conjunct Jupiter and in partile conjunction to saturn, mercury sextile mars. Saturn is conjunct Jupiter.

The manners of the native, her qualities of mind, are drawn from the planet or planets in the ascendant, or, if there are not any planets in the first house, we take as significators the planets joined to the moon or mercury, with the strongest planet therein manifesting the strongest influence.

As Saturn is the strongest planet joined to the moon (and also to mercury), we take him as significator of manners. Lilly says this gives: “Grave persons, with a certain austerity, advised, excogitating profound matters, taciturn, solitary, laborous, patient, preservers of riches, sparing and thrifty, studious for their own profit, zealous, mistrustful.”

The planet representing manners is also influenced and affected by planets joined to it. In this case, Saturn is conjunct Jupiter which, according to Lilly, modifies the temperament as follows: “If Saturn be significator of manners and Jupiter be joined with him by body or aspect, Jupiter then qualifies the ill nature of Saturn, and therefore you must judge not the manners saturnine, but to participate much of Jupiter; and the native shall be a very prudent, wise, quiet, a man of great council and judgement, learned.”

Jupiter brings out some of the better qualities of Saturn and, as Jupiter is Hot and Moist by nature, it lessens some of the Saturnine melancholy. It adds a little affability, expansiveness and puts a little positive spin on the dark thoughts of fate, mortality, and bondage that sometimes occupies the Saturnine mind.

Of the Wit or Understanding of the Native

Significations of Wit and Intellect are taken especially from Mercury and his configuration with the moon, for he governs the rational soul and animal spirits in the Brain, as the moon does the Vegetative and strength of the Brain, more near the senses. – William Lilly, Christian Astrology p.543

Following St Thomas Aquinas’ tripartite model of the soul, William Lilly described a person’s intelligence to be based on a balanced relationship between his vegetative and sensitive souls (signified by the Moon) and his human or rational soul (signified by Mercury).

The part of our intelligent soul that is governed by the moon concerns firstly the unconscious processes that keep us alive, our heart beating, our metabolism running, our body and brain nourished: it is that basic part of us that allows us to survive, thrive, and pass on our genes; secondly, our instinct, our perceptions, our ability to take in sensory information and to react accordingly (particularly to threats), to store, process and use information.

Mercury governs our rational soul, that part of us – in the Thomistic school of philosophy, at least – that separates us from the animals. It is that part of the soul us that allows us to introspect, self-reflect and endows us with language and the capability of abstract thought.

It is the quality of our rational soul (signified by the dignity of Mercury in the nativity) and a balanced relationship between all three parts of the soul, the relationship between the moon and mercury, that we look to and aim for if we want a healthy and harmonious mind.

Significators: Moon trine sun, square mercury, venus, jupiter, and saturn. Mercury conjunct Jupiter and in partile conjunction to saturn, mercury sextile mars.

Moon is in detriment, and Mercury peregrine is less afflicted. The square between Mercury and the Moon shows an uneasy relationship between instinct/unconscious desire and reason, with reason generally winning out. Mercury is swift in motion which Lilly says “renders inconstant men, but quick of apprehension, oft changing their opinions, but yet will give good reason for their opinions.” Mercury in an airy sign “renders most acute and witty men, and good linguists speaking many languages”.

Mercury is in partile conjunction with Saturn which makes wit more wary, man more constant and persevering. It is conjunct Jupiter which makes one more honest, learned, and of upright judgement. Gadbury tells us: “When Mercury is with Jupiter, well posited, the Native is of incomparable judgement, and proves usually one of great learning, honesty and uprightness.” Saturn helps memory, Jupiter introduces honesty and humanity. As Saturn is highly dignified, the conjunction with Mercury often leads to concern with the sciences, with mathematics, philosophy, astrology and highly technical subjects. Gadbury again: “Mercury in conjunction of Saturn, and Saturn well dignified, the Native is solid and grave; of a profound judgement, and a deep understanding.”

Of Riches, or the Goods of Fortune

The significators of wealth are:

1. The cusp of the 2nd house, Lord of the 2nd house and its dignities. Jupiter in Libra dignified by term.
2. Lord of sign intercepted in the second house, if applicable. N/a.
3. Part of Fortune and its dispositor, and Jupiter, a general sign of wealth. Part of Fortune in Pisces, a mutable sign. Jupiter is dispositor of Part of Fortune and dignified by term.
4. Planets in 2nd, with planets nearer cusp having a more evident and apparent signification. Moon in capricorn, in detriment.

Aspects of significators:

Jupiter square Moon (Lord 9 in House 2), conjunct Mercury (Lord 8 and Lord 10 in House 11), conjunct Saturn (Lord 3 in House 11)

Moon trine Sun (in Leo intercepted in House 9, in House 10), square Mercury (Lord 8 and Lord 10 in House 11), square Venus (Lord 7 in House 12), square Jupiter (Lord 2 and Lord 4 in House 11), square Saturn (Lord 3 in House 11)

Part of Fortune opposition Sun (in Leo intercepted in House 9, in House 10), sextile Moon (Lord 9 in House 2)

The greater benefic rules the 2nd house as well and is the dispositor of the Part of Fortune. It is dignified by term, and is strong in a succedent house. This is a testimony for wealth.

Moon afflicted (peregrine and in its detriment) in the second house, square saturn, is a testimony for loss of fortune. Gadbury says of the moon in the 2nd house: “makes the native sollicitous about riches, and the goods of fortune; yet never settled riches succeed to any upon such a position; but the native is still wavering, now rich, now poor; soon prosperous, soon unhappy; sometimes in favour of great persons, and much gain thereby; other-sometimes cast below all possible hopes.”

Mixed fortune. There is testimony for wealth given Jupiter is a significator and dignified, but an ill-dignified moon contributes to ups and downs in fortune due to its changeable nature.

Jupiter signifies wealth by religion, government, justice, commendations from persons of quality, natural honesty and morality and from people of the nature of Jupiter: noble souls, churchmen, lawyers, judges, governers. Jupiter in the 11th house, signifies profit from: the happy conclusion of any business, friendship, support of friends, profit arising by office or preferment, hope, comfort, promotion by commendation of friends. Jupiter as ruler of the 2nd and 4th houses, profit from your own work, father, lands, patrimony, buildings, mines.

Venus as Lord of the 11th, the house Lord of the 2nd is in. Profit from love, mercy, affability, courtesy, gifts of friends, and from women, wedlock, dowries, jewels, gaming, cards, dice. From delicate persons, mild and amiable, musicians, poets, painters, mother, sweetheart.

Although Jupiter rules the second house, as the moon is in the 2nd house, the most immediate effects on your fortunes will be from this planet which, as ruler of the 9th, intimately connects your sources of money to foreign travel, long distance journeys, and perhaps, matters of faith, spirituality, and bad dreams. It indicates travel for the acquisition of wealth.

Moon trine peregrine Sun in the 10th house, with no receptions, shows wealth coming from our career, from honours and preferment. These may be slow in coming, however, and less than expected due to the sun being peregrine and therefore without essential dignity.

Moon square Mercury who is Lord of the 8th and 10th houses and is in the 11th house, Mercury peregrine, Mercury in the face of the Moon. Loss from friends of mercurial nature (witty, smart, changeable) perhaps work colleagues.

Moon square Venus dignified by domicile, Venus in the 12th House and Lord of the 11th and 12th houses, Moon in triplicity of Venus. Gain from women, from prisons, clandestine matters, great cattle (horses, oxen, etc) secret affairs.

Moon square Jupiter, Jupiter is dignified by term and Lord of the 2nd and 4th Houses and is in the 11th House, Moon in the terms and fall of Jupiter, Jupiter in terms of the Moon. This shows gain from your own labour, work which you may dislike intensely or be disappointed in sometimes but which is perhaps tolerable at other times. As Jupiter is also Lord of the 4th house, it can show gain from fyour father, from patrimony and from your husband’s career (as the 10th house from the 7th is the radical 4th). As Jupiter is in the 11th House you may gain from friends of a Jupiterian nature, these are people who are noble-minded, sanguine, affable, warm and friendly, and perhaps well-to-do.

Moon square Saturn exalted in the 11th house, Lord of the 3rd. Moon in the domicile of Saturn, Saturn in the Face of the Moon. This shows profit from friends of a Saturnine nature: perhaps older, mature, responsible, dependable, solitary. As Lord of the 3rd, it may show some gain from siblings, messengers and communications

The Part of Fortune is in the 4th House at 18’18” Pisces and disposited by Jupiter. It is conjunct the antiscion of Jupiter (16’38 Pisces), and conjunct the antiscion of Saturn at (20’38” Pisces). Sun is in opposition to the Part of Fortune. This confirms the earlier testimony of gain from friends of Jupiterian and Saturnine nature, from land, from patrimony. There may be some loss from persons of authority in your place of work.

Gadbury says of the Part of Fortune in the 4th House: “demonstrates a stable patrimony unto the native; and fortunates him in hidden things, treasure and the like: and he shall be fortunate by dealing in mines, minerals and metals, and all things of the earth, if it be not infortunated there.”

Of Kindred, Brothers, and Neighbours

If the native will have brothers or sisters:

Lilly suggests this method works best for the first born.

Significators:

1: The 3rd House, and 5′ preceding and 5′ following
2. Lord of the 3rd House , Planets in the 3rd House, planets intercepted therein
3. Mars as general significator of brothers, Moon as general significator of sisters

Saturn rules the 3rd House and is intercepted therein as ruler of Aquarius. There are no planets in the 3rd house.

Mars, the signicator of brothers is peregrine in Leo, a barren sign.

Moon, the significator of sisters, is debilitated in Capricorn, a barren sign.

Saturn is a barren planet but is in Libra, a fruitful sign, where he is dignified by exaltation.

Venus in Libra, dignified by house, a fruitful planet in a fruitful sign, aspects the cusp of 3rd house by square.

The native likely has few brothers and sisters, possibly 1 sister and 3 brothers (given by aspects to Lord 3, and judging by whether they are in masculine or feminine signs)

Of the condition of the kindred

This is determined by the strength of the significators. Saturn is exalted, Moon debilitated, Mars peregrine. Moon is less well dignified than Mars, and Mars is aspected by both fortunes, so brother/s may be in better condition than sister/s.

Of concord or unity and love between native and kindred

This is determined by aspects between Lord of the Ascendant and Lord of the 3rd House. Mars, native’s significator, is applying to Saturn, significator of kindred, by sextile, which is an aspect of concord, however note the receptions: Saturn is in its exaltation and triplicity but in the detriment of Mars (the kindred love themselves and are friendly with one another, but hate the native); Mars is in the terms, face and detriment of Saturn (the native may be on talking terms with some of her kindred, may be acquainted with some, and may hate others of her kindred). Gadbury says of the presence of Cauda Draconis in the 3rd House that it causes quarrelling and disagreement between the native and his kindred.

Of the Parents, and the Patrimony of the Father

Significators:

1. 4th House (0’18” Pisces)
2. Lord of the 4th = Jupiter dignified by term in the 11th House
3. Sun in diurnal, Saturn in nocturnal, genitures: Sun, peregrine, in the 10th House, in Virgo.
4. Planets in the 4th house = none

Father in reasonable condition after native’s birth (Jupiter dignified by term). Mars, native’s significator, applies by sextile to Jupiter, father’s significator. This aspect indicates a relationship of concord, however Mars is not in any dignity of Jupiter, and Jupiter is in the detriment of Mars. This suggests, if there is contact between them, native does not have strong feelings for the father, and father spends more time with siblings (Jupiter exalts and is in triplicity of Saturn, significator of native’s siblings, and is in the detriment of Mars).

Of the Mother

Significators of the mother are:

1. House 10. 0’18” Virgo.
2. Lord 10. Mercury, peregrine, in succedent 11th, in Libra
3. Venus in diurnal, Moon in nocturnal, genitures. Venus in domicile in Libra in cadent 12th,.
4. Planets in House 10. Sun peregrine.

Natural ruler is strong but in the 12th house, accidental ruler is peregrine. Mother in good condition but alone or unable to make much of situation.

Of concord between parents

Lord of the 4th (Jupiter) and Lord of the 10th (Mercury) are joined corporeally by conjunction, but there is no reception between them, showing that if they are together, there is no strong feeling between them.

Of the Marriage of Women

1. Significators are Sun and Mars as general significators of the husband; Lord 7; Planets in the 7th.
2. Are significators: barren or prolific, in double bodied signs or fruitful; whether significators are fortunes or infortunes, strong or weak

The 7th House deals with marriage and long term relationships, and these are what will be considered in this part of the reading. As marriage and long term relationships were practically the same thing in medieval times, the term marriage here denotes both types of relationships.

Sun peregrine in Virgo in angular 10th. Virgo a barren sign.

Mars peregrine in Leo in cadent 9th. Leo a barren sign.

Lord 7 is Venus in Libra in the succedent 11th, the significator is a fortune. Libra is a fruitful sign, Venus a fruitful planet, and she is benefic and strong in dignity. This is a testimony that the native will marry.

The native marries with some difficulty as the significators, Venus and Mars, apply by square aspect without reception. The significators Sun and Mars are peregrine and, according to Lilly, this is a sign that the husband will be foreign (i.e., from a different background than the native). The Sun is in a bi-corporeal sign, but Mars is in single-bodied sign, the is indicative of one or two husbands or serious relationships. The Lord of the 8th House, the house of other people’s money and, more particularly, the husband or partner’s money, is Mercury, who is peregrine, and this Lilly says is a sign that the husband is neither very rich nor very poor. There is no mutual reception between the significators, but Mars is sextile the benefic Jupiter, so there is likely concord and happiness in the marriage.

Lilly says that the husband’s conditions are described by the Lord of the 7th, and has this to say about Venus: “She signifies a quiet man, not given to Law, Quarrel or Wrangling, not Vitious, Pleasant, Neat and Spruce, Loving Mirth in his words and actions, cleanly in Apparel, rather Drinking much then Gluttonous, prone to Venery, oft entangles in Love-matters, Zealous in their affections, Musical, delighting in Baths, and all honest merry meetings, or Maskes and Stage-playes, easie of Belief, and not given to Labour, or take any Pains, a Company-keeper, Cheerful, nothing Mistrustful, a right vertuous man or Woman, oft had in some Jealousie, yet no cause for it.”

The stature of a person signified by Venus is: “a man of fair, but not tall Stature, his Complexion, being white, tending to a little darknesse, which makes him more Lovely; very fair Lovely Eyes, and a little black; a round Face, and not large, fair Hair, smooth, and plenty of it, and it usually of a light brown colour, a lovely Mouth and cherry Lips, the Face pretty fleshy, a rolling wandering Eye, a Body very delightful, Lovely and exceeding wel shaped, one desirous of Trimming and making himself neat and compleat both in Cloaths and Body, a love dimple in his Cheeks, a stedfast Eye, and ful amarous enticements.”

Venus as significator often gives a partner who is pleasant and agreeable and usually pleasant to look upon.

Of Children

The significators are:

1. The 5th House, then the 11th House, then the 1st House, if fruitful planets in prolific signs, children, and contrarily
2. If no planets in these houses, then we consider the Lord of the 5th House

Aries is on the cusp of the 5th house which is a barren sign. Mars, ruler of the 5th, is in Leo, a barren sign.

In the 11th House are posited: Mercury in Libra (Mercury has a mixed nature and is in a fruitful sign), Jupiter in Libra (a fruitful planet in a fruitful sign), Saturn in Libra (a barren planet in a fruitful sign)

The testimonies indicate children: at least one, possibly two.

Of Infirmities and diseases of the body

The significators are:

1. The ascendant and its Lord as significator of temperament and life
2. The Sun and the Moon as ruler of the vital spirit and the humours respectively
3. The 6th House and its Lord
4. The planets in the 6th House
5. The 7th House and its Lord as being opposite to the ascendant

The general health and strength of the body is judged by the dignity of the luminaries with the Moon ruling the humours, the four basic substances that make up the body, and with the Sun ruling the vital spirit, the energy that animates the body. Here the moon is debilitated, and the Sun less so as it is peregrine.

Lilly gives us two particular testimonies regarding the luminaries that apply to you. One is that the sun in the 10th house gives the native long life. The second is that the moon afflicted by a saturn square gives infirmity. What this means is that you may want to ensure your humours stay balanced which you can do through your diet and activity, e.g., as your temperament is highly choleric, you may want to avoid spicy or fatty foods, you may wish to manage your stress levels adequately, particularly when faced with trying circumstances, etc. This is especially important in your case as your temperament is linked to your health as Mars is Lord of the ascendant as well as the 6th House.

A good general guide is to engage in activities that have the opposite quality to your temperament, i.e., that are Cool and Moist. This can involve pursuits that are literally cooling and moist like swimming in a cool lake, or metaphorically so, such as engaging in gentle meditation to cool a hot head and soothe strong emotions.

Mars, ruler of the 6th house is peregrine in the 9th house in Leo. He is oriental which increases his heat and dryness, and he has strong accidental dignity. Disease and illness may come from contentious and stressful foreign travel, and may be inflammatory in nature, bringing fevers, or it may affect your left ear, gallbladder, veins. As Mars is in Leo, the parts of the body ruled by Leo may be affected: the heart, stomach, the ridge of the back, sides, diaphragm or midrift.

Saturn afflicts Mars by sextile, and they are in mutual reception by detriment so Saturnine illnesses may also be a concern, and body parts that may require special attention are the right ear, spleen, bladder, bones, teeth and the leg (knee to ankles) as ruled by the 11th house.

Mars is in a fixed sign, and this is often indicative of illnesses of long duration, however Mars is aspected by both Fortunes who are both well-dignified suggesting that, should you be subject to a disease, it will most likely be curable with help coming from Mercury, who rules medicine and physicians, from Jupiter, signifying money spent on health care and good council, and from Venus, symbolising cure via simple good fortune, divine assistance or natural magic.

Of travels, dreams, religion and spirituality

Of Journeys

The Lord of the 9th House is the Moon, who is the natural ruler of journeys and foreign travel. The moon in the 2nd house signifies that foreign travel will be associated with money, that is, you will travel to increase your fortune. The presence of Mars in the 9th house indicates that at least some of these journeys might be stressful and contentious.

Of Religion and Spirituality

The 9th house is also connected with matters of faith, religion and spirituality of an orthodox nature and was known to the Greeks as the House of God (as the third is the House of the Goddess and rules minority and esoteric religions). Mars in the 9th Lilly tells us inclines the native to atheism, doubt, superstition and “false dreams”. He doesn’t have many nice things to say about atheists, being positively medieval in his attitudes towards religion, however the presence of the North Node in this house may have a positive effect on the veracity of portentous dreams.

Of Dreams

Afflicted as Mars is by Saturn, the native is likely to suffer from bad dreams, night terrors, dreams of “contentions, Fights, Enmities, Tumults, Horses, Wars, burning of Houses, of Dogs, Hunting, etc”.

Of Learning and Education

As the house preceding the 10th House of Honours, the 9th House was associated with the learning required to obtain these honours. Regarding your education, Gadbury tells us that “if the Sun in a diurnal geniture be in Gemini or Virgo, it shews the native to be well skilled in sciences, and more expert than others of his time.” (Doctrine of Nativities, p79) and “when he [Lord of the ascendant] shall be placed in the ninth of a nativity, the Native is apt to acquire knowledge; he will be honest and religious, and will travail much, and receive advantage thereby. But by being ill posited there, he will be oft in danger of falling into the hands of thieves and robbers in his long journeys.” (Doctrine of Nativities, p106).

Gadbury also tells us that the North Node in the 9th confers riches and honour through religion (and, by extension, through education and learning).

Of the Magistry , Exercitation or Profession of the Native

The significators are as follows:

1. The luminaries, particularly the Sun, and from the planets aspecting them, especially the Sun
2. From the Lord of the 10th House
3. From the planets in the 10th House
4. Fixed stars near the cusps of the 1st and 10th Houses

Sun is in Virgo, it is peregrine in the 10th House. Sun trine debilitated Moon in Capricorn in the 2nd, ruler of the 9th. As discussed earlier in the section regarding the 9th house above, this gives us another testimony for a connection between your career and foreign travel, study, religion and spirituality.

Regulus is conjunct the Midheaven. This gives honour, preferment, good fortune, high office, and military success (Vivian Robson, Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology.)

The principal significator of career is the Lord of the 10th house, Mercury, who is peregrine in the 11th. Career matters may be connected with friends, native either working with friends or being introduced to career prospects through friends.

When Mercury is Lord of the Profession, he gives a profession which tends to be associated with “Letters, Numbers, Writing, Eloquence, Arithmetic, Astrology, Philosophical Speculations, merchandise, Poetry, the framing of artificial Engines or things, etc. He therefore makes Grammarians, chief secretaries, Arithmeticians, Geometricians, Philosophers, Poets, men full of employment, given to Merchandising and Traffic, men given to Discipline..” according to Lilly. That is, a profession that is technical by nature rather than physical.

Mercury is applying to a conjunction with Jupiter who is in his terms which argues successful endeavour and makes the native friends of great persons. Mercury is in partile conjunction with Saturn which Lilly says generally “make such men perform servile Offices in other men’s employments”, however, given that Saturn is highly dignified, it is much more likely to incline the profession towards academic subjects. Mercury is afflicted by a sextile aspect from Mars. We consider the aspects below.

Mercury is square the Moon in detriment in the 2nd, who is ruler of the 9th. Mercury in face of moon. The career of the native and the native’s money may have a difficult relationship.

Mercury is trine a peregrine Mars in the 9th house, who is Lord of the 5th and 6th. Mercury is in the detriment of Mars. Native’s career may be harmed by sickness (inflammatory conditions, stress, contentions), or by native’s pleasures. The career is connected with foreign travel which may not always bear fruit.

Mercury conjunct Jupiter in his terms in the 11th house, Jupiter is Lord of the 2nd and 4th Houses. Career is aided by Jupiterian friends. Career improves native’s financial status and home.

Mercury is in partile conjunction with an exalted Saturn in the 11th house, Saturn is Lord of the 3rd. Mercury is in the exaltation of Saturn. Career is helped by Saturnine friends, people who are older, responsible, etc. Perhaps also by siblings, letters, messengers, communications.

Of friends

Many planets of several natures in 11th house describes a mixture of friends, but the most trustworthy are described by the most fortified planet, Saturn and Jupiter.

Testimonies:

Mercury peregrine – a scarcity of friends, most of them false, perfidious, mutable

Jupiter dignified by term – friendship and familiarity of many, abundance of good and profitable friends, their love is sincere and profitable to native.

Saturn exalted – a multitude of friends, yet for most part prove dissemblers, or perform not their trust cordially. Saturn generally gives false and sluggish friends according to Lilly, however, especially given that Saturn is exalted, this is not true in this case – Saturnine people aren’t false, they just tend to be antisocial in general and not particularly demonstrative of their friendship.

You will likely have several friends of very different natures, some of whom may be backbiters and unfaithful. Libra, the sign on the cusp of the 11th, a cardinal sign also indicates friendships developing suddenly and, perhaps, ending just as suddenly.

The types of friends are determined by the planets concerned:

Saturnine friends – older, men dealing in metals, stonecutters, underground professions, melancholy, solitary types

Jupiter – church dignitaries, prelates, lawyers, nobles, rich men, rulers, honest, sober men, judges, gentlemen, generally friendly, affable, sanguine people

Mercury – Ingenious men, poets, excellent artificers, learned men, mathematicians, merchants, subtle fellows, intellectuals, other professionals or academics

Venus is ruler of the 11th house, and she therefore modifies the behaviour of the friends described above. Although Venus is highly dignified and therefore in her best light, she is trapped in the 12th with little power to act. Given that the 12th is associated with imprisonment, feeling trapped, having one’s freedom curtailed, it is also going to put a pretty extreme spin on the notion of friendship – it’s an all or nothing sort of thing for you, which likely scares off many would-be friends.

Venus is also square the Moon (Lord of the 9th House) and square Mars (who is in the 9th). It is quite possible that friendships may develop (and come to an end, or be put on the backburner) due to travel.

Of enemies

Venus as Lord of the 7th and 12th rules known and secret enemies, or rather, honourable and dishonourable adversaries, since an adversary out in the open is less likely to stab you in the back. A 7th house enemy can be a friend who has a heated argument with you, a 12th house enemy is a ninja who shoots a poisoned bamboo dart at you from behind the shower curtain just when you are making yourself comfortable on the porcelain throne.

The nativity indicates few enemies as there are no planets in the 7th house and no planets in opposition to the luminaries. Those enemies that you have may be powerful as Venus is in own domicile, secret, but with little power to act (as Venus is in the 12th house), and they will not be able to hurt you.

As Venus is Lord of the 11th and the 12th houses, at least some of your friends may really be frenemies (particularly female ones).
