An election from Bonatti for gambling

Bonatti gives us an election for dice games, but which can be extended to other games of chance. We want the following conditions:

Electional conditions

1. The ascendant in movable sign
2. Lord 1 in good condition and well disposed
3. Lord 7 weak and impedited
4. If possible, let Lord 8 in House 2 or House 1, received by Lord 2 or Lord 1 (but do not let Lord 8 receive Lord 2)
5. Preferably we want the Moon separating from a free benefic and applying to another benefic, and the moon should be above earth, and we should be facing in the direction of wherever the moon happens to be at the time

Simple elections for buying and selling

Naturally, if you are trading on a somewhat regular basis, you may not have the good fortune to be able to wait a prolonged period of time for the perfect election to come along to buy or sell your wares. Perhaps you only have a brief window to negotiate a price for the local Afghan warlord’s opium crop before exfil. For just such instances, Ramesey provides some more basic electional rules for trade (some are designed to benefit the buyer and others the seller, so bear this in mind).

Ramesey’s House Elections for Buying and Selling

For those times when you want some more information about the sale, Ramesey describes a house based method using angles of the chart to denote the buyer, seller and the goods. These can either be used to elect a time to buy or sell, but also as event charts.

We’ll assume that you’re a CIA spook who wants to purchase the wares of the local Afghan warlord for your own nefarious, probably illegal, and likely domestic, uses.  Ramesey gives us two methods to ensure the opium we buy is topnotch and procured without too much difficulty.

A Sun Talisman Election

Sun is dignified by domicile in Leo and is conjunct the midheaven. It’s just separated (within a degree) from Mars and is making an applying sextile to the benefic Jupiter.  The Moon is waxing and it’s next applying aspect is a conjunction to Jupiter. For London the date is 28 July 2017 and time is 1307 (1:07PM). It’s the hour of the Sun – in London it literally starts just as the Sun culminates so your drawing/inscribing/etc will have to start then and completed within about 10 minutes, although you can continue any consecrations for the rest of the Sun hour.  You can see the chart for this election below.

An election for exorcism and house cleansing from Bonatti

And if someone wished to eject or expel phantasms or some harmful spirit (which is called the Devil by certain people) from some place or home, or some harmful thing either terrible or infesting the inhabitants of that place, or [if] in some person there were some violent motions (which is called demonic), and you wished to administer some medicine or perform some exorcism or the like, and you wanted to elect for him the hour fit for it, adapt the Ascendant and its Lord, and beware lest the Ascendant be Cancer or Leo or Scorpio or Aquarius; not let the Moon be in one of those signs; let the Ascendant be whatever [other] one you wanted, and its Lord free, and let [not] the Moon be in any one of them, joined to some benefic, nor let her be impeded.

A Picatrix Election for Enduring Love

This is a pretty fortunate month for the ambitious astrological magician with both Mercury, planet of traders, scholars and astrologers, and Venus, planet of all the other fun things you do when you are not working or studying, dignified by domicile.  Mercury is in Gemini from 7 June to 22 June, and Venus is in Taurus from 6 June to July 4.

Creating and reconciling relationships – two-fold images of the Picatrix

“If you do this for two friends, make the 11th house of the first image the ascendant of the second image; and if you wish to generate friendship between man and wife, make the ascendant of the second image the seventh house of the first image.  And make it so the lord of the ascendant of the one who will return the friendship [i.e., the friend or wife] makes as good aspect with reception to the lord of the ascendant of the other image.  Then join the images and bury them in the place of the one who is to have friendship [i.e., you] and they will be friends as before.” – Book 1, Chapter 3, Greer and Warnock translation

Horary, and how to destroy cities using the Picatrix

1. Conjure Godzilla to destroy a city

The Picatrix mentions several times the possibility of using the results of a horary reading to make magical images. For example, in Book 3, Chapter 5, one of the elections given “for the destruction of cities, houses and the like” utilises the ascendant of the city to be destroyed. (If you are wondering how a city could possibly have an ascendant associated with it, the ascendant of the city would have been drawn from the mundane chart erected for when that city was built.) However, in the absence of a known ascendant for the city, one could use the ascendant of a horary chart erected for this particular purpose.
