The primacy of electional astrology in creating astrological talismans
The most important aspect in the creation of an astrological talisman by far is the elected time, since it is this time period when a particular planetary energy is strongest that allows us to embody this intelligent spiritual energy in manifest form.
Similar to the last set, these elections represent a time when Saturn is strong and well dignified. As it is the hour of Saturn with Saturn dignified and on the midheaven, these elections are an ideal time to create talismans or other objects that embody this Saturnine influence.
Saturn, the Greater Malefic, is dignified in Capricorn for the next couple of years. Father Time ingressed into his own domicile on the 20th of this month to preside over this year’s Saturnalia festivities.
Saturn can be petitioned at this time for any of the things that he rules: for long life, for understanding profound sciences, for land and buildings and anything that can be found beneath the earth, for magical knowledge, and for the favour of powerful people, as well as the destruction of enemies, and to create discord between people.
In honour of Mars’ ingress into Scorpio, here is an election from Guido Bonatti’s Liber Astronomiae, Treatise 7 on Elections for going to war and for conquering enemies.
Given the serious nature of the subject (and the fact that the astrologer might get beheaded by either side if he gets this wrong), war elections can be incredibly involved and intricate. We require the following conditions:
Mars is dignified by domicile in Scorpio this month from 9 December and will remain in that sign until the 19th of January next year. It is a good time to do all those martial things you’ve been putting off like crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you and hearing the lamentation of their women.
Of course, if you are not a Cimmerian barbarian, or you are simply short of worthy enemies to vanquish, you may want to use the time to create a Mars talisman for strength, courage, protection and general Martian goodness.
Over a span of five years, a group of people consisting of two mediums, volunteers and scientists, some from the Society for Psychical Research, conducted seances twice-weekly in a darkened cellar room in a house in Scoles, Norfolk.
After a year or so of twice-weekly seances, the seances attracted the attention of a group of spirits – dubbed The Spirit Team – consisting, according to the spirits themselves, of “thousands of minds”, who decided that they were going to assist the Scole Group obtain proof of the existence of life after death. What followed was a series of communications and phenomenon that would put most magical practitioners who dabble in evocation (and, I imagine, quite a few advanced practitioners, too) to shame .
This mansion is for safe sea journeys, to strengthen the imprisonment of captives, for alchemy, for a successful hunt, for love between man and wife, and for good luck in general. You can find more information about the Mansions, and this mansion in particular, here.
If you are concerned that waiting for an opportune time for a particular operation may not be possible or would be extremely inconvenient, the Greater Key of Solomon offers some planetary day and hour elections and some basic lunar elections which work well in a pinch.
This post was inspired by this post from the author of Blogos and in particular the following quotation from it which describes the synchs surrounding the performance of some theatrical works of ritual magic with a Jupiterian theme:
We were treated to two brutal storms in the immediate aftermath of each show and although theatrical ritual is the most powerful I no longer think of these rituals as magickal causes so much as rites that are ”timed” to happen at the same time as the inevitable (although this year super charged because of environmental change) storms. I might think I am doing the ”timing” but this is delusional, I know only one iota of the workings of my own mind let alone that of higher dimensional entities that might treat reality like a notepad. It is not so much an act of summoning the storm as much as it is the storm summoning me. This ”de-centralizing” of the magical act – no longer ”I am the boss twisting reality/probability around me with my strangely attractive sigils”, or whatever, but that cause and effect are entangled – reduces the selfishness and ego that is at the heart of many sorcerors’ efforts and sublimates it into wizardry. I don’t do the magic but the magic is done through me.
Someone asked the question of whether there is any difference in the function and potency of talismans of Venus created when she is in her different dignities – in other words, when Venus is in her domicile in Taurus or Libra, or exalted in Pisces – and why one might opt for one dignity over another in the creation of a talisman to attract love.
